The Macon County Conservation District is a beautiful area located in Decatur, IL. The goal of this district is to preserve both the natural and cultural resources of Macon County, Illinois. There are many ways to get involved with the Macon County Conservation District today. Although the Rock Springs Nature Center is temporarily closed until further notice (as are all in-person educational programs), the Conservation Area and trails are still open. General Information
The Macon County Conservation District has many unique opportunities to offer for all ages. It’s open from 7 AM to sunset every day of the year, so there’s plenty of opportunities for you to go explore. Normally they would offer in-person educational programs, but due to current social distancing restrictions, those are closed until further notice. However, the Conservations Areas and the trails are still open and ready for your next adventure.
Your Areas
These areas are for you and your family and friends to explore. There are five Conservation Areas and one nature center. The Rock Springs Nature Center is temporarily closed, but once it’s back open you’ll want to check it out. The five Conservation Areas are Friends Creek, Fort Daniel, Griswold, Rock Springs, and Sand Creek. Each has its own unique trails for hiking. Sand Creek even features a horseback riding trail. No matter which one you choose, be prepared to have a great time.

Historic Sites
There are many incredible historic sites within the Macon County Conservation District. The Oglesby Mansion is one of these sites. This mansion was home to Richard J. Oglesby, who was best known for his friendship with Abraham Lincoln. Another historic site of interest is the Bethel School. The Bethel School is a one-room school that was built in 1901. There are so many more sites you won’t want to miss.
