There’s nothing quite like a family camping trip to promote togetherness and make memories – if it’s done right, that is. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a total novice, everyone can use a few pointers (or refreshers) when it comes to safe and prepared tent camping. Avoid common camping missteps like being caught out in a downpour or not packing enough grub for your hungry “camp-anions.” We’ll get you started with a few tips for your next outing.

Make a List, Check It Twice

The world can be divided into two types of people: list makers and non-list makers. When it comes to tent camping, lists are crucial. It’s not always feasible to run to a convenience store if you forget to pack a necessity. Your best line of defense? Make a checklist with everything you think you may need (and a few things you hope you won’t). Then, if something unexpected arises, you can at least avoid the blame.

Tailor your checklist to your own family’s needs and the length and location of your camping trip. We’ll get you started with this sample list of a few universal must-haves:

  • Tent
  • Air mattress and/or sleeping bags and bedding
  • Cook stove, utensils, and food
  • Flashlights
  • First aid kit
  • Wet wipes

What to Wear

Make sure to dress for the weather and pack extra clothing. A day that starts out just-right can end up downright chilly once the sun sets, and a pop-up shower can have everyone soaked to the bone. Making sure you have the right type of clothing and rain gear is your best bet for staying comfortable.

Safety First

The best way to preserve the fun factor on any camping trip is by exercising common sense when it comes to safety. Keep these things in mind:

  • Keep your campsite clean, tidy, and clear of all traces of food to avoid attracting potentially dangerous wildlife.
  • If you’re camping far from where you parked, secure food by hanging it in a tree.
  • Keep cold foods cold and well-packed in an ice-filled cooler.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings and watch out for poison ivy, oak, and sumac; venomous snakes; and other hazards.
  • Make sure someone on the outside knows where you plan to set up camp.
