Leather boots are a staple in many wardrobes during the winter months. You know how to rock them with any outfit, but do you know how to properly take care of them? Leather boots aren’t high maintenance, after all, leather is one of the toughest non-synthetic materials in the world, but there are certain things you should do in order to keep them in the best shape possible. Here are three tips to help you keep your leather boots in tip-top shape this winter.

Keep Your Boots Dry

Leather is a natural material, even though it is processed in order to make your boots, and it can hold in moisture if left damp. Even a waterproof coating won’t keep all moisture out. While it’s perfectly fine for you to take your boots through rain or snow, when you return home you need to make sure to place them somewhere warm and where they can properly dry out. Placing them outside in the cold could cause permanent damage to the leather. If you want to be extra safe, wipe them off when you take them off inside to ensure the most care possible.

Don’t Let Them Overheat

Heat can cause lots of damage to leather boots. When you have wet boots, it may seem logical to use a hairdryer or any other heating element in order to dry them off, but that’s definitely a bad idea. Exposing your leather boots to heat can make them dry out, shrink, and crack. Once this happens, the damage is irreversible. Make sure to not allow harsh heat elements anywhere near your boots.

Moisturize Your Boots

In order to keep your boots in the best condition possible, you should maintain a cleaning and moisturizing schedule for your boots. After every use, make sure to wipe off your boots to clean off any dirt and moisture. Then use a mild, unscented soap bar and some water in order to deep clean them. Every few uses, rub a moisturizer into the leather in order to keep it pristine.
