4 Bug Vehicle Cleaning Tips

Cleaning car windshield with microfiber cloth

You don’t have to spend much time on the road to end up with a car covered in bugs. Bugs are more than an eyesore. If you don’t clean them off, they can permanently damage the paint. Fortunately, you can protect your paint and keep your car looking its best with these bug cleaning tips for your vehicle.

1.      Clean Your Car With Detailing Spray and a Microfiber Towel

If you just drove through a hoard of bugs, you can clean off the splatter with detailing spray and a microfiber towel. Start by spraying the formula on the towel or directly on the bugs. Then, use the towel to lift the bug splatter off your car. Don’t go back and forth or in circles, or you might damage your paint.

2.      Remove Bugs With Car Soap and a Bug Sponge

You might think all is lost if the splatter didn’t come up with the detailing spray. Fortunately, you can use car soap and a bug sponge to tackle hard-to-remove splatter. First, pour the soap into a bucket and saturate the sponge. Next, apply some of the soap directly to the bugs and wipe it off with a sponge. If the sponge dries out, dip it in the bucket again. A dry sponge can scratch and damage the paint.

3.      Clean Your Vehicle With Bug and Tar Remover and a Microfiber Towel

Sometimes, the splatter is so stubborn that even car soap doesn’t do the trick. When that’s the case, you need to use bug and tar remover spray. First, spray the bugs on your car and let the formula soak in for 30 seconds. Then, wipe it off using the microfiber towel. If this removes some but not all of the bug splatter, use car soap and a bug sponge again.

4.      Treat Splatter With a Citrus-Based Degreaser

What if you encounter bug splatter so severe that none of the first three methods work? Then, it’s time to use a citrus-based degreaser such as Citrol. It breaks bugs down, allowing you to wipe the remains off your car. It also works wonders on bird droppings.

After you apply the degreaser, wash your vehicle. This will remove any film that the degreaser leaves behind.

Cleaning the bug splatter of your vehicle will help you restore its luster. However, sometimes, bug splatter is just one in a long line of problems. When that’s the case, it’s time to upgrade your wheels.
