The Halloween season is prime-time for movie nights, and there are plenty of family-friendly films that everyone can watch together. Pop some popcorn, turn out the lights, and enjoy these light-hearted Halloween movies.
Fun for All Ages
No other phantom is as family-friendly as Casper the Friendly Ghost, and in 1995’s Casper, the forever-young character makes new friends while putting up with the antics of his three mischievous uncles. Debuting as a made-for-TV Disney movie, Halloweentown quickly became a fan favorite, following the adventures of a teen witch and her grandmother. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown features the whole peanuts cast and the classic jazz music that always accompanies their holiday fun.
Starring a witchy trio of Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, Hocus Pocus has become an annual favorite since its debut in 1993. Midler is even known to hit the stage in her Winifred the Witch costume while on tour. The film follows a group of young friends as they thwart the witches’ Halloween scheme with the help of a talking black cat. While Coco isn’t a Halloween movie, Día de los Muertos is right around the corner, and the film is a great way to introduce your family to the treasured Mexican holiday of remembrance through Pixar’s signature heart and soul.
Kinda Creepy
If your family is ready for spookier scares, there’s no shortage of films that balance eerie antics and comic relief. Addams Family Values brought the black-and-white TV series to feature-length film with the entire oddball ensemble, plus a new addition to the off-beat household. Stop motion makes anything a little creepier with its uncanny movements, and it was the perfect animation style for Tim Burton ventures like The Nightmare Before Christmas. While the movie technically takes place during the yule-tide season, it’s absolutely crawling with Halloween atmosphere and creepy characters.
Elsewhere in Tim Burton’s catalogue, Beetlejuice follows a couple’s surprise entry to the afterlife as they recruit a smarmy ghost to rid their old home of its new occupants. Before the season’s over, take a trip back to the early days of horror film with the original Frankenstein. With a brilliant performance by Boris Karloff as the monster, the movie remains a timeless classic and the most memorable adaptation of the Mary Shelley novel.
